5th Grade Book Club is "Boundless!"

Our 5th grade book club has been hard at work all year reading lots of young adult titles.  We've read Mazerunner, Eye of Minds, Cinder, & our latest title is Boundless by Kenneth Oppel.  We celebrated finishing that book earlier this week with some ginger beer.  It's kind of like root beer but with a spicy ginger zing!  Check it out!  

We'll be reading one more book for these kids zip off to middle school and a brand new world of cool young adult literature!  I'll miss these kids for sure.  Many of them have been my students for six years!  Forest North won't be the same without them!

Special Reading Spot Photo Contest Winners 2015!

We decorate the library walls each year with 10 blown up photos of our students reading in unusual or special spots. I'm excited to announce our winners who will be displayed for the 2015-2016 school year!  Check them out & congratulations to our winners.

Armadillo Readers Choice Voting & Battle of the Armadillos

Today we're getting right back into the swing of things with a couple of Armadillo Reader's Choice Award Voting Parties and Battle of the Armadillos!  Now we've had many Armadillo votes & dance parties before, and we've had lots of Battles of the Bluebonnets before, but this is our first time doing the Battle of the Armadillos!  Special thanks to Mrs. Miller over at Herrington Elementary for her amazing idea.  I'm so excited to try it with our K-2 classes.  Check out Mrs. Miller's class below getting it done.

Students will use iPads (courtesy of Ms. Bell, our lovely art teacher with a NextGen classroom) to scan this QR code and vote for their favorite book.  Then, we'll use the iPads to play a Kahoot where students answer 2 questions from each of the 10 Armadillo books, and the student with the fastest, most correct responses wins from each K-2 class.  Sounds fun, right?  Which book will win?  Only time will tell! Book Fair Under the Sea Wrap Up!

Dear Forest North,

Thanks so much to all the staff who dressed up for our Creatures from the Deep program, bought books, & made a wishlist for the Book Fair Under the Sea!  

Special thanks to the students Robotics and Theatre Club for having performances in the library to boost sales! Thanks to Mrs. Chadney for overlapping Field Day to give us a boost, too! Thanks so much to all the students and their families for supporting literacy & the library and making purchases at the book fair! A big thanks as well to our Book Fair volunteers who helped organize our helpers, decorate, help students make wishlists, serving as "personal shoppers" for students, and being a cashier.  Check out some of our helpers- not pictured are Terea Mills, Shelby Mills, and both Ethans - thanks y'all for helping Mrs. Vetter & me take the whole thing down!

Book Fair Under the Sea Thursday Program!

On Thursday, we had an amazing night here at the Book Fair!  First of all, we set a record for Thursday sales at a Book Fair for the last 12 fairs!  That's amazing and great news for our students- every little bit helps us earn more money for new library books next year.

We had some special programs that helped earn us so much money.  The Robotics team shared their cool SUMO BOT competition with us.  We also had the Theater Club entertain us with some monologues and a great fractured fairy tale play!  Finally, we had a kid costume contest.  We had 7 awesome contestants and our winner was Madelyn in first grade.  Congratulations, Mermaid!

El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children's Day/Book Day), commonly known as Día, is a celebration every day of children, families, and reading that culminates yearly on April 30. The celebration emphasizes the importance of literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

Día is a nationally recognized initiative that emphasizes the importance of literacy for all children from all backgrounds. It is a daily commitment to linking children and their families to diverse books, languages and cultures. The common goals of all Día programming are to:

• Celebrate children and connect them to the world of learning through books, stories and libraries.
• Nurture cognitive and literacy development in ways that honor and embrace a child’s home language and culture.
• Introduce families to community resources that provide opportunities for learning through multiple literacies.
• Recognize and respect culture, heritage and language as powerful tools for strengthening families and communities.

Camp Bluebonnet Scholarships!

Mrs. Fournier & Mrs. Kupersztoch (librarian at England Elementary in RRISD) are excited to teach our 5th year of Camp Bluebonnet this summer.  Check out this flyer for more information.  The library is offering a special opportunity this week to two lucky students! 

The Forest North Library is offering 2 scholarships for students to attend Camp Bluebonnet at Old Town Elementary, 6/22-6/25, co-taught by Mrs. Fournier.  For more information, see flyer.

To enter the contest, please submit a 1 page persuasive essay about why you should be chosen for a Camp Bluebonnet scholarship.  Essays are due to the library by Friday, 5/1, at 3:30.  Campers must be a 3rd-5th grader next school year, and campers will need to provide their own transportation to and from camp on 6/22-6/25 at 9:00 and 12:00.
